ABOUT OUR PATRON

St. Jude Thaddeus, patron saint of impossible causes, guiding St. Jude Catholic Church in Mumbai with hope and faith.

St. Jude Thaddeus

St. Jude Thaddeus was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ and is traditionally identified as the author of the Epistle of Jude in the New Testament.  Tradition holds that St. Jude tirelessly preached the Gospel in difficult and hostile regions, including Mesopotamia and Persia. He faced extreme opposition but remained faithful until his martyrdom, symbolizing endurance against all odds.

Over the centuries, many people who prayed to St. Jude for help in hopeless situations reported receiving unexpected and miraculous assistance. This led to the widespread belief in his powerful intercession, reinforcing his title as the saint of the impossible.

Key Facts about St. Jude Thaddeus:

  • Name: His name "Jude" (or Judas) comes from the Hebrew Yehudah, meaning "praised." "Thaddeus" is thought to be a nickname meaning "courageous" or "large-hearted."

  • Identity: Sometimes called Judas, son of James, or Lebbaeus in different Gospel accounts.

  • Patron Saint: He is known as the Patron Saint of Hopeless Causes and Desperate Situations.

  • Missionary Work: Tradition holds that he evangelized in Judea, Samaria, Mesopotamia, and Persia, where he is believed to have been martyred alongside St. Simon the Zealot.

  • Death: He was likely martyred in the 1st century, often depicted with a club or axe, the instruments of his martyrdom.

  • Feast Day: Celebrated on October 28 in the Roman Catholic Church.

In the 20th century, devotion to St. Jude grew significantly due to the work of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (founded by actor Danny Thomas) and numerous churches dedicated to him. Today, millions worldwide turn to St. Jude in their greatest struggles.

Symbolism:

  • Image of Christ: Often depicted carrying an image of Jesus on a medallion, referencing the legend of King Abgar of Edessa, whom St. Jude is said to have healed.

  • Flame on His Head: Represents his presence at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles.

  • Club or Axe: Signifies his martyrdom.
